Computers & Early Internet |

As if I haven't been posting enough lately, LOL. But I just got this idea to write about my childhood and growing up with computers and the internet and all that. I just thought it would be... fun to elaborate on my comment replying to shadowbliss.
I've been using computers since I was just a tot! I'm actually not sure our house has ever been without a computer. By the time I was old enough, I was playing games on my mom's computer and my dad's computer (divorced). They were both pretty interested in new technology and still are actually. I'm pretty sure this is what we had (or something very similar!).
...then eventually the internet was available! I'm the youngest in the family, and I know my parents and older sisters all had email addresses before I did, and they had penpals, mailing lists they were a part of, etc. But I didn't get my own email address until maybe age 11 or 12 (still too young, given that meant I also had access to all those chatrooms, instant messaging, etc...)
I don't blame my parents because it was such a new thing that there wasn't really a precedent of parents talking to their kids about things like online predators. I don't recall either of them sitting me down and being like, "Don't IM with strangers, don't give out your phone number, etc." It's possible they did, but maybe they just didn't drill it into me enough, LOL.
Anyway, my first memories of the internet came before I even had my personal AOL account! The earliest memories I have of the internet are with my sisters. We would surf the web together, looking at fansites for our favorite bands. Those are some good memories. :o)
Speaking of our favorite bands:
Re: Announcement From My Favorite Band, Pulp's reunion tour is UK only... for now at least! I'm still holding out hope that they'll at least get as close to me as NYC! I'm still thinking about asking Mom for a loan to go see them overseas though... Tickets all go on sale on 11/04... I really can't decide whether to talk to her about it or not. I may hold out for US dates, but IDK that could be a mistake... :o\
I really wish all three of us sisters could all go together! Hey, a girl can dream...
Belle & Sebastian is coming to our city though, so the part of the family that's here will go to that together, I think (I hope)! Mom, J, and I don't have our tickets yet though. Hopefully, they aren't selling out as I type this, damn... Better get on it.
That's all for now. Have a happy Halloween if I don't write again before November! |

UFC Dreams |
[Oct. 28th, 2022|05:52 pm] |
Last night I dreamed that I wanted to be a UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) fighter. I wanted to be known as "Betsy the Beast," LOL! But of course, in the real world these fighters don't give themselves nicknames, but earn them from others...
Anyway, there was a buff, jock dude who was gatekeeping and saying, "You're not fit to be a fighter, you're too old and fat," etc. And then there was a buff, black woman with lots of tiny braids pulled back into a ponytail, who was encouraging me to exercise and get in shape so I could do it! Telling me, "it's not too late!" It felt good having her stand up for me.
In reality, it is too late! After all, I'm pushing 40 and fucking obese.
But I wish I would've gotten into sports when I was younger. Whenever J watches UFC, I think, That could've been me... Since I'm quite tall and big-boned, I feel I could've been a successful fighter. Although I was somewhat physically fit when I was younger, I don't know if I had the right mindset for fighting. I believe it takes a lot of nerve. Basically, you have to be cool with getting punched in the face multiple times! I was just too fragile back then...
While my dad was a star athlete in high school, my mom was not at all sporty! The three of us girls weren't really encouraged to get into sports.
If I recall correctly, being on the girls' basketball team in the 4th grade was my idea. That and a few karate lessons around the same time period were the extents of my sports career. I don't believe my older sisters participated in sports, aside from what was required of them in gym class, of course. I really can't imagine either of them being into that sort of thing!
But yeah... Maybe in another life, or a parallel dimension or something! |

The Friday Five for October 15, 2022 |
[Oct. 15th, 2022|03:35 pm] |
1. How many languages do you speak? Just English and a tiny bit of Spanish.
2. What is your mother tongue? English.
3. What is a language that you would like to learn and why? Japanese because of my interests, and I'd like to visit Japan someday. My sister has been studying it for many years and could help me! Hebrew would be interesting too, and my other sister knows Hebrew.
4. Does it bother you when people speak a language you don't know in front of you? Why or why not? Of course not! I guess it sort of depends on the context, but as long as they aren't doing it to fuck with me or put me down, I don't have a problem with it!
5. Speak to me. ...in a language I can hear / Humor me before I have to go ๐ถ |

Mom and I made hamantaschen today! We made them with cherry filling, and my favorite, mohn (poppy seed) filling. We used this recipe, and tbh they were just ok, but it's kind of a cheat recipe, so what was I expecting? Next time, I'll insist we try this one. Anyway, she's going to take them around to all our family and friends tomorrow.
Here's a photo of our hamantaschen, aren't they pretty? Even if they were rather bland in taste. This photo happens to be mostly the cherries and just a couple mohn up at the top there.

I got so wrapped up in writing about my life and things, that I forgot about Daily Questions for 2022 for well over a week!

Christmas is Coming |
[Dec. 21st, 2018|06:56 pm] |
Christmas is coming, and I'm very excited! My love and I will be spending Christmas with my family this year! My family will, of course, have our yearly viewing of Christmas Eve on Sesame Street, the best Christmas special ever!! Blows 'em all out of the water!
It's an hour long, and it's one of those movies where like - you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll feel all warm 'n' fuzzy!! It's just a really good, sweet, enjoyable movie, and I encourage you to give it a try, whether or not you have kiddos to watch with!!

questionoftheday #118 |
[Oct. 22nd, 2018|07:56 am] |
questionoftheday asks: What object holds the most sentimental value for you?
My answer: I'm a very sentimental person, so it's hard to choose! But I guess the object that really stands out would be the teddy bear that my sister made for me in her home economics class. I must've been about five, six years old when she gave it to me, and I named it Memo (pronounced "mee-mo").
I kept Memo with me for a long time, through many years, and many moves... But I think she may have been lost at some point because I haven't seen her in a few years. She could be at my mom's, but... I don't know... I sort of doubt it. ๐
But oh, well... Life goes on, I guess. |

2) Would you rather it be 10 degrees too hot or 10 degrees too cold? (Does your answer change if thatโs indoors or outdoors?) I'd rather it be too cold, and bundle up in blankets! My answer doesn't change.
3) What is the best thing that happened to you today? I got to babysit my niece, pick up my mom from the airport, and hang out with my BF!
4) Is youth wasted on the young? (Follow-up: are you old or young?) Absolutely! I'm in my thirties - not old, not young.
5) Pasta salad or potato salad? Tuna salad - on a sandwich. My favorite!
