As if I haven't been posting enough lately, LOL. But I just got this idea to write about my childhood and growing up with computers and the internet and all that. I just thought it would be... fun to elaborate on my comment replying to [personal profile] shadowbliss.

I've been using computers since I was just a tot! I'm actually not sure our house has ever been without a computer. By the time I was old enough, I was playing games on my mom's computer and my dad's computer (divorced). They were both pretty interested in new technology and still are actually. I'm pretty sure this is what we had (or something very similar!).

...then eventually the internet was available! I'm the youngest in the family, and I know my parents and older sisters all had email addresses before I did, and they had penpals, mailing lists they were a part of, etc. But I didn't get my own email address until maybe age 11 or 12 (still too young, given that meant I also had access to all those chatrooms, instant messaging, etc...)

I don't blame my parents because it was such a new thing that there wasn't really a precedent of parents talking to their kids about things like online predators. I don't recall either of them sitting me down and being like, "Don't IM with strangers, don't give out your phone number, etc." It's possible they did, but maybe they just didn't drill it into me enough, LOL.

Anyway, my first memories of the internet came before I even had my personal AOL account! The earliest memories I have of the internet are with my sisters. We would surf the web together, looking at fansites for our favorite bands. Those are some good memories. :o)

Speaking of our favorite bands:

Re: Announcement From My Favorite Band, Pulp's reunion tour is UK only... for now at least! I'm still holding out hope that they'll at least get as close to me as NYC! I'm still thinking about asking Mom for a loan to go see them overseas though... Tickets all go on sale on 11/04... I really can't decide whether to talk to her about it or not. I may hold out for US dates, but IDK that could be a mistake... :o\

I really wish all three of us sisters could all go together! Hey, a girl can dream...

Belle & Sebastian is coming to our city though, so the part of the family that's here will go to that together, I think (I hope)! Mom, J, and I don't have our tickets yet though. Hopefully, they aren't selling out as I type this, damn... Better get on it.

That's all for now. Have a happy Halloween if I don't write again before November!

I've been using computers since I was around 3-4 myself, and was on the internet as early as when AOL dominated the web.

Yup, I estimate I started playing games on our Macintosh around that age. Are you of the millennial generation too, Remy?

I didn't elaborate in my prior comment (because I was writing it to you on a Nokia) but I first used a computer when I was...4 or so. My father was big on computers and because my sibling and I liked playing Jedi Knight as a video game, he got us ONE computer to share so we could play it on our own. Then Windows XP rolled around and I fucked around in MS Paint, got new games (The Movies Stunts And Effects - I poured HOURS into that, making my own films. I lost all of it though).

Social media, however, the first time I ever used anything even remotely like that was I'd use IMDB to write reviews and use their forums. That was mostly because I was a nerdy kid with no friends. To a point where I didn't see a NEED to get a proper SM until I was 17.

That all makes sense now! I have to admit, I initially assumed you to be closer to my age, just judging from your interests and stuff! No offense intended, I actually mean it as a compliment!

P.S. I miss MS Paint! I know there are comparable programs, but it's just not the same, you know? And in sort of the same vein, I loved KidPix as a kid!

I was born in 1996.

I found a MS Paint clone (I forgot the URL) but it managed to bring back memories as I made a couple of images with it.
