Computers & Early Internet [Oct. 30th, 2022|12:26 am]

As if I haven't been posting enough lately, LOL. But I just got this idea to write about my childhood and growing up with computers and the internet and all that. I just thought it would be... fun to elaborate on my comment replying to [personal profile] shadowbliss.

I've been using computers since I was just a tot! I'm actually not sure our house has ever been without a computer. By the time I was old enough, I was playing games on my mom's computer and my dad's computer (divorced). They were both pretty interested in new technology and still are actually. I'm pretty sure this is what we had (or something very similar!).

...then eventually the internet was available! I'm the youngest in the family, and I know my parents and older sisters all had email addresses before I did, and they had penpals, mailing lists they were a part of, etc. But I didn't get my own email address until maybe age 11 or 12 (still too young, given that meant I also had access to all those chatrooms, instant messaging, etc...)

I don't blame my parents because it was such a new thing that there wasn't really a precedent of parents talking to their kids about things like online predators. I don't recall either of them sitting me down and being like, "Don't IM with strangers, don't give out your phone number, etc." It's possible they did, but maybe they just didn't drill it into me enough, LOL.

Anyway, my first memories of the internet came before I even had my personal AOL account! The earliest memories I have of the internet are with my sisters. We would surf the web together, looking at fansites for our favorite bands. Those are some good memories. :o)

Speaking of our favorite bands:

Re: Announcement From My Favorite Band, Pulp's reunion tour is UK only... for now at least! I'm still holding out hope that they'll at least get as close to me as NYC! I'm still thinking about asking Mom for a loan to go see them overseas though... Tickets all go on sale on 11/04... I really can't decide whether to talk to her about it or not. I may hold out for US dates, but IDK that could be a mistake... :o\

I really wish all three of us sisters could all go together! Hey, a girl can dream...

Belle & Sebastian is coming to our city though, so the part of the family that's here will go to that together, I think (I hope)! Mom, J, and I don't have our tickets yet though. Hopefully, they aren't selling out as I type this, damn... Better get on it.

That's all for now. Have a happy Halloween if I don't write again before November!

Announcement From My Favorite Band! [Oct. 27th, 2022|03:37 pm]

Oh boy! My favorite band of all time (Pulp) is making an announcement tomorrow (before midday, UK time)! I'm going to wake up super early to find out what it is. I'm hoping for a reunion tour, though it's more likely just a few gigs in the UK... It's highly unlikely they'd play the US. Still, if they play anywhere in the US (NYC?), I'm going to try to make it happen! I'm already kind of bracing myself for the disappointment of not being able to get tickets though...

Fingers crossed they'll have a USA date and I can get tix! I'd seriously beg, borrow, and steal to see Pulp live! It's been a dream of mine for like 25 years!

2. What was one of the most interesting concerts you've been to? What was interesting about it?

That title would have to go to Captured! By Robots! The show I went to was nearly 20 years ago, but it still sticks out in my mind!

So yeah, there's this guy who's programmed a bunch of robots to play musical instruments to his hardcore metal songs - not my usual genre, but I went on a whim after seeing an ad in the local alt-weekly. It was at an all-ages venue, and it was only $5 to get in if you dressed like a robot (which my friend and I did)! This was way back in 2003, but they're still releasing new music and touring in 2022!

Again, hardcore is not my preferred genre! But it was really neat to see these robots play! I think I still have some stickers I got that night, but I really wish I still had the stamped(?) leather bracelet I bought that said "C!BR" on it. The tour I saw him/them on was a biblical theme, and I remember they had the movie The Ten Commandments up on a screen.

It was pretty wild, but I don't really know how to describe it, it's the type of thing you'd just have to experience for yourself!
